Safety and security film

What safety and security film actually does

Glass does not become safe when you apply film to it. What changes is what happens when it breaks. Safety film holds the glass together on breakage, preventing dangerous shattering and complying with AS2208 for Grade A safety glass. Security film does the same, but goes further – significantly thicker and stronger, it is anchored to the frame where possible to resist forced entry and mitigate blast pressure. Two distinct products, both doing something the glass alone cannot.
Holds glass together on impact

When glass breaks, the film holds the shards together in place rather than scattering them. The glass may crack, but it does not shatter and fly.

Reduces injury risk dramatically

Flying glass is one of the most common causes of injury in accidents and break-ins. Safety film significantly reduces that risk for anyone near the window.

Slows forced entry

Security film makes glass considerably harder to break through quickly. Even after impact, the film holds the pane together, buying time and acting as a deterrent.

Available clear or tinted

Safety film comes in clear grades that are invisible, and tinted grades that add privacy, heat reduction and glare control alongside the safety properties.

Who needs safety and security film?

The applications are different for commercial buildings and homes, but the outcome is the same – glass that performs better, occupants that are better protected, and a client who is satisfied with the result.

Safety and security film is relevant to both construction (new builds) and commercial (existing buildings) – whether it is a builder specifying film before practical completion or a building owner, facilities manager or commercial tenant looking to upgrade an existing space. In both cases the need may be driven by any of the following.

Schools and childcare centres

duty of care for children requires safety glass or equivalent protection at low-level and accessible glazing.

Government and civic buildings

safety film is frequently specified to meet AS2208 compliance requirements.

Retail shopfronts

security film deters smash-and-grab, slows forced entry, and reduces liability from shattered glass during incidents.

Healthcare facilities

patient safety requirements often extend to glass breakage risk management.

Office buildings

older glazing that does not meet current standards can be brought into compliance with safety film as a cost-effective retrofit.

Security-sensitive buildings

SCEC-approved security film available for government and high-security applications.

Glass near children

sliding doors, low windows, bathroom panels and internal glass doors are all high-risk surfaces in homes with young children.

Ground-floor and accessible windows

security film makes break-in attempts significantly harder and noisier, deterring opportunistic forced entry.

Beach houses and holiday properties

unoccupied properties are higher-risk for break-ins, and glass is always the weakest point.

Older homes

glass in properties built before current safety standards may not meet today’s requirements, particularly near doors and stairs.

Combined with solar or privacy film

safety properties can be combined with heat reduction or one-way privacy film in a single product.

Safety film or security film?

Both hold glass together. The difference is how much force they can withstand.
Safety Series

Safety film - Designed to hold glass together on accidental impact - a child running into a sliding door, glass broken in a storm, or spontaneous failure. Meets AS2208 human impact standard. Available clear or in tinted grades with solar and UV benefits.

100 microns thick. Single or double layer. Suitable for residential and most commercial applications.
Security Series

Security film - Heavier gauge film designed to resist deliberate forced entry and withstand higher-energy impacts and blasts. Holds glass together even under sustained attack, buying time and acting as a serious deterrent. SCEC-approved grades available for government, schools and high-threat buildings.

175 to 375 microns thick. Single or double layer. Recommended for retail, government, and security-sensitive commercial applications.
Clear Grades

Clear safety film - Invisible once installed. The glass looks and behaves the same way but holds together on impact. The most common choice for residential sliding doors, schools and childcare centres.

Available in both safety and security series. High optical clarity – does not discolour or yellow over time.
Tinted Grades

Tinted safety film - Combines safety protection with solar control, privacy and glare reduction. Available in black, neutral or silver tints. A practical option for office facades and residential windows where both safety and sun control are needed.

Available in neutral (35% and 48% VLT) and silver (15% VLT) grades. Rejects more than 98% of UV.

What a pleasure this company was to deal with. From my first contact with Mel, discussing the details of the work required to Steve the installer. Their detail, timeliness and pricing were excellent. Every email was responded to immediately. Steve arrived on time to the minute. He was friendly, knowledgeable and did a fantastic job and left the area very clean. Now I’m considering getting some more windows covered. The difference in the heat coming through the windows was noticed immediately. Thanks

The team at Tint did a first class job on my huge apex window. Scott and Steve were prompt, courteous, efficient and very obliging, even moving my furniture back into position. Already I notice less glare and I am confident when summer kicks in, the reduction in heat will be amazing. Very pleased and I can highly recommend Tint. Thank you!
